The SUG Elections are over and they were winners and losers, people cried while some smiled. Above all sportsmanship was displayed by all candidates and online voting though not a major success was something that was worth commending.
But all eyes definitely in this Election was on the Race for President of the Union where 7 candidates were successfully screened to contest for the election out of a rumoured 11 that bought nomination form.
Emediong Mfon Ekanem emerged victorious in a keenly contested Election in what some people described as a shocker, while some said it was expected as his humility and strong bond with freinds stood out. A four hundred level student of the prestigious faculty of law. Young, committed and ready for service, Emediong went with the initial slogan – I believe and a sub-slogan – This time the president can be your friend. Then when Comrade Martins Asukpa openly declared his intention not to contest for the same position anymore and support for Emediong, the slogan – Embrace Progress was added.
When the results were announced Emediong was cheered round school by supporters of the believe moment, friends and fellow students to celebrate his victory. He after this day – 13th of July was said to have secluded himself for a while, in other to absume the victory and prepare a worthy thank you message for his supporters, opponents and the University community at large.
He made his first public appearance on since after the victory on Sunday, 15th July at the Teens Church – Living Faith Church, Ikot Edibo Oku, Uyo where he shared his experience in a testimony which according to attendees was filled with emotion and very spectacular. Later in the service, Prayers were offered for the President elect, and a closed door meeting followed after service with the Resident Pastor and other church Executives. See Photo’s below.
Later that day in a Facebook post, the President elect dropped a Thank you message with received wide appreciation and commendation from students of the school, alumni and students of other higher institutions of learning in the country. In the speech, Emediong reemphasized some of his promises especially the slogan he used during campaigns – This time the president can be your friend.
University of UYO, I love you. With all that’s within my power, I promise to be the best President you’ll ever have. I promise to remain accessible, I promise to be your friend. Thank you for giving me this opportunity to serve. Now its time to practice the love I preach. Thank you for believing.

On the same evening, the president elect was confirmed by sources to be at the University’s main campus at Nwaniba to show special appreciation to the Engineering students, who according to him and other senior members of his campaign team were behind his last hour success in the election. He was said to have gone room by room thanking each person personally for contributing to his success while assuring them of the friendliness of his government.
Emediong promised the students reasonable and tangible projects when giving his manifesto, a manifesto which was widely commended. He also promised not to do away with the friendly nature he built on his way to this victory. He promised to stay true to friends and the University community at large, not leaving anyone out.
We stand with Emediong and the believe team to tell you that Emediong Ekanem is young, but we believe he’s the leader Uniuyo needs at now and urge the entire University community, both staffs and students to help him fulfill this dream and give us the University of our dream.
