AN ADDRESS PRESENTED BY THE PRESIDENT, STUDENTS’ UNION GOVERNMENT, UNIVERSITY OF UYO, COMRADE EMEDIONG EKANEM ON THE OCCASION OF HIS INAUGURATION ON TUESDAY THE 25TH DAY OF SEPTEMBER, 2018, AT ONYEMA UGOCHUKWU HALL, TOWN CAMPUS.

PROTOCOL

I spoke to Jesus a year and a half ago, I told the Lord I needed to be President, He said, “Faith is the substance of things hoped for the evidence of things not seen” have faith.

Our distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen, nobles of the press, I stand here today humbled by the task before me, grateful for the trust you have bestowed, mindful of the struggles of our past leaders.

To the King, the one who enthrones and dethrones, the creator, the one who chooses leaders, the father to those who have none, the Alpha, the God Almighty, thank you Lord. To my mother and family, my all in all, the light and ever present companion at every lonely tunnel, thank you. My heart in totality goes out in love, with an overwhelming gratitude to the Nigerian Students through whom the dream “Believe” became a reality for the one in a life time opportunity to stand as President to address this crowd, this sea of industrial, political and innovative minds of the varsity.

Special gratitude to the innovative and independent management of our dear institution under the leadership of our beloved Vice Chancellor, Prof. Enefiok Essien (SAN) for believing in a free, fair, credible and student centered election, at whatever cost. The electronic voting, being more than a welcome development, a pillar in the democratic temple of our great institution.

To senior comrades, Theresa Nde, Diana Robinson, Emmanuel Ernest, Abasianam James, Ndiana-Abasi Nkop  and Ifiok Andrews, your zeal and passion to serve is worthy of note and a such, commendable, your spirit of sportsmanship,I will never forget. I pray you all, that in the same spirit of love that has always guided us all, we join hands together, to build the republic of our dreams.

Time and again, the Presidential oath has been sworn, nevertheless, this time, let it be seen as redemption as though the Messiah is upon you, may this era mark a relative end to the struggle, just believe. Your yearning engulfed the inner places of my heart. Your voice is the reason I am President.

For everywhere we look there is work to be done, today, the University community is not at that enviable state, dilapidated buildings, insecurity on campus, inadequate educational facilities, lack of sufficient scholarship, and sponsorship of student entrepreneurs and several environmental hazards. On this day, we gather not because we are perfect, but because we have chosen hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord. I believe, as a team, as people driven with purpose funded by this sense of love and responsibility we will come together to curb these errors. All these we can do, all these we will do. I believe.

We must toe the path of our reputable leaders past, we must remain the most productive and educationally sound community we once were, our capacity remains inherently undiminished. Family, the time of standing by protecting narrow interests, and putting off necessary progress is long gone, we must pack ourselves, dust ourselves and begin again the work of remaking our University.

To those who cling to power through illegal association on campus, to those who oppose justice and encourage corruption, know that you are on the wrong side of history, but that we will extend a hand if you are willing to unclench your first.

Here we are, paying our last respects to days of a union ran on the orders of a settled few, today as President, I proclaim political, social, economic and religious liberty, the ordination of the people centered government. The vision is to build the republic of our dreams, one built on the foundation of love, dedication and hardwork. This vision is to ensure that in ten months, the University of Uyo, stands out, not barely in numbers, but this time, with numbers that reflect on the political and economic map of our state and nation at large.

Nevertheless, we must rekindle our sense of love and gear all efforts towards the actualization of the aforestated dreams, together we can. We are stronger together, we are a nation, a people united with no respects to socio-cultural differences, we are a team. We must begin to see the University of Uyo as our own little country, we control our security, we determine our economy. Grow Uniuyo!

As President, the safety of every student remains a priority. The welfare of those who stay in the hostels is of essence. Tell that very student who feels that he or she has no one, that the President is his or her friend.

An oath I say, a call to service, I hear, today I will fold my sleeves, only to unfold same in ten months, I will serve even on my knees, Passion, love, duty and a good reputation, may his words guide us.

I have heard your cry as regards the state of the hostel, I have heard your cry with respect to the economic situation, the seemingly unending insecurity on campus, finally, never again will you have to shed a tear, never again shall it be said that a student suspended studies, due to financial constraints, never again shall students be beaten and battered on campus.

Above all, let it be resounded across all quarters, let it be written in the history books, a King is crowned, a President, one of the people and for the people, a friend. Let today go down as the rebirth of unionism in this institution, let it bring joy to the ears of my people, let the people rejoice. Your welfare is my concern.

Family, I believe my administration will recognize the welfare of students on every level.

I believe in a government blessed by your goodwill, I believe the redemption you sought is here. I love you, I always have and always will.

LONG LIVE THE UNIVERSITY OF UYO
LONG LIVE THE STUDENTS’ UNION WITH LOVE
Emediong Ekanem, THE PEOPLES’ PRESIDENT
